To demonstrate their skills the German watchmakers aimed to create a wrist watch that can be wound once a month and show the accurate time both in the first and in the last day of winding.

They managed to achieve a 31-day power reserve thanks to two stacked mainspring barrels with an inside diameter of 25 mm, which occupy three quarters of the movement’s diameter. Such space is needed to house the mainsprings, which are 1,850 mm in length and five to ten times longer than those found in conventional wristwatch movements. The springs give maximum of 20Nm of torque (for comparison: Lange 1 that also has two stacked mainspring barrels is characterized by maximum 5 Nm of torque). The force of two springs is enough to lift a 100 gm bar of Swiss chocolate.

How to wind such powerful springs?

The watchmakers faced the problem of the driving gear selection: if they provide the winding head with usual intensification, it will be necessary to rotate the head 500 times to wind the mechanism – it is extremely inconvenient. That’s why the Germans decided to use a winder that was traditional for the pocket watch of the past. The watch is completed with two large steel winders. There is a ratchet and a stop of spring tension inside the winder. It is enough to rotate the winder 31 times to wind the watch.

According to the laws of physics the springs with such a large power reserve can’t evenly transmit energy during the whole moth – as the spring subsides it loses its torque and the balance begins vibrating slowly. The problem is known as isochronism and different devices such as a fusil and a remontoir are used to handle with it. The power reserve of an ordinary wrist watch isn’t very large (usually 42 hours) and the high quality of modern materials and the accuracy of technologies allow bringing isochronism to nothing. Lange 31 is not an ordinary watch and watchmakers had to rack their brains over the transmission of constant torque to balance without depending on the degree of spring winding. The device of energy chain-drive – a fusil – was invented by Leonardo da Vinci 500 years ago, however as to a 31-day power reserve the size of this unit was not acceptable for a wrist watch. That’s why they used another technical solution for this watch that is well known for watchmakers – a remontoir or a “constant force” device. Briefly, the remontoir acts like a buffer; the energy of the mainsprings, driving the gear train, loads up the remontoir, which then releases the energy in a more equal way towards the escapement. This way, the escapement is kept free of varying power supply, which subsequently improves the stability of its function and equal timekeeping. The Lange remontoir is complicated enough: it is located between the double fourth wheel, and the wheels themselves are connected by the spring of the remontoir. The Lange construction integrates a coiled hairspring, notably of almost the same size as the hairspring in the balance. It is “loaded” every 10 seconds (whereas the Journe mechanism is “loaded” every second) and makes use of a Reuleaux polygon (a triangle with an equal diameter). It allows the remontoir spring to give its energy to the balance 6 times a minute, to run down and then again to be charged by the mainspring. As a result the German watchmakers got the even energy transmission, the constant amplitude and the accuracy both during the first day and the thirty first day of the work. After it a special device stops the mechanism – the winding degree of the mainspring becomes too low to wind the remontoir springs, and although the watch may continue working, the accuracy is lost. Watches with a remontoir are rare today and not only because they are very complicated, but also as it is rather difficult to regulate such a watch, it is almost as difficult as to regulate tourbillions and only experienced masters can manage to do it. Lange 31 is not a small one – the case is 46 mm, it is 15,8 mm thick and its weight is 230 gm, but there is a German power reserve for the whole month inside this large platinum case. This watch is worthy of it!
